Gemini: A deeper look

Written By Elisabeth Paul

Gemini is a sign linked to duality. Its energy is both progressive and regressive - it goes out into the world, but also returns inward, and it is here where the conclusions are then formed according to a value judgement (it’s a rational sign). We often forget that part - thinking of Gemini as a sign only concerned with the reaching out - the outer world. But understanding the regressive energy and mutability of the sign, we can learn that he also has a deeper side/ability, though his concern or end goal is not the depths - such as with the Scorpio.

Looking beyond the superficial character traits, adjectives commonly used to “describe” the sign, we can learn more of the actual psychological character. A lot comes from the curiosity associated with Gemini - a curiosity shared with his opposite - Sagittarius, though the curiosity plays out and is motivated differently with him.

Curiosity leads “the twins” on a quest for knowledge in order to understand and be able to make connections, both within and outside himself. Being a “thinking” type - air sign - the mind is concerned with these connections, and in order to gain the knowledge he craves, he must communicate and get into contact with people, information. In turn, he will learn languages and other ways of communicating in order to do so.

The lungs are associated with Gemini, and we can see how the breathing in and breathing out represents that taking in of information and releasing it. The duality is present here.

Gemini is not so much concerned with the purpose and meaning behind everything (such as Sagittarius), but he likes to uncover what is underneath. This can be linked to his ruling planet Mercury. Understanding the mythology of Mercury, we can also understand Gemini better.

Mercury/Hermes was among other things a messenger between the gods, as well as gods and mortals. He guided souls to the underworld. We can translate that to the psychological realm and learn that the underworld represents our unconscious depths. Hence, the Mercury, or Gemini character is indeed concerned with connecting the unconscious/unknown and consciousness/the known.

The Geminian way of going about things is one of curiosity underlaying everything he does. Making quick turns, impulsive decisions are necessary in order to cover as much ground as possible - both literally and metaphorically. Boundaries are to be crossed, in the realm of the mind as well as the physical world. Travel/being on the go is therefore natural for the Gemini individual.

There is a certain innate restlessness associated with the sign, and Gemini individuals might have heard they are a bit unreliable/fickle. Again, we must understand that it is that sense of curiosity and drive for knowledge, information and connecting things, ideas and people that is the reason for this.

When Gemini changes his mind, he has made a personal value judgement, and no longer finds that particular point of focus agreeable, or beneficial. Like stated earlier, unlike a deeper sign such as Scorpio, Gemini does not remain in the depths - and so that judgement is often based on what can be gathered from the surface of things, or from a quick peak and look around below.

All information is taken in and processed via the mind/thinking. There is a certain coolness that might be perceived from signs belonging to other elements, who function differently; however, that coolness and use of the mind can be of good use when entering deeper territory, such as the unconscious.

Gemini can approach things a bit detached and is able to single out various elements without first being feeling wise overwhelmed by what he finds. He is not scared of the hidden, he just doesn't dwell there very long.
