In order to explain the psychological nature of scorpio, it may be beneficial to use the metaphor of the deepest waters; a territory that is generally unknown and foreign, where there might be creatures living we don´t know about. It´s a place that is dark and murky and although mysterious, perhaps also scary for most to envision. Well, this territory can be associated with the dwelling place of scorpio - the deep, dark, and the unexplored.

She is not content with the surface of things or the shallow waters. Where other signs may feel a bit suffocated as they sink into the depths, scorpio actually prefers it and has the ability to both breathe and have a clear vision “down there”. These deep waters can be translated to the personal unconscious, and the hidden complexity of what resides there - colors the scorpio energy and its motivation.

Pluto is the modern ruler of this sign, and in mythology (Greek mythology: Hades) he was the god of the shadowy place beneath the earth - the underworld, where souls would go after death. Now, this explains why scorpio is linked to a kind of death. It is important to remember that this is just symbolic. Death and dying is part of the necessary process of renewal and transformation, and as such it is part of the essence of scorpio. She will cyclically experience rebirth, but for the sake of growing and evolving. Scorpio is probably the one sign that is able to truly see and appreciate the beauty of decay.

Being a water sign, which is associated with the feeling function, the aforementioned says something about the psychological activity and how scorpio deals with content coming from within or without herself. She will make a value judgement based on whether it feels agreeable or disagreeable. Being a fixed sign, she might also hold on to feelings and convictions for a long time, but when she lets go of either, it´s mostly an intense release that carries with it the seed of something all new; hence the rebirth.

We keep reading descriptions about the intensity of scorpio, about power and control. It´s important to understand that like any other sign, the scorpio energy has different levels of manifestation depending on the maturity and how evolved the individual who carries the sign is. As such, she can certainly be concerned with the so called “lower” or primitive levels (actual shadow qualities of the sign), but once integrated, scorpio knows that is what makes her empowered. She has self understanding and can empower others as a consequence instead of perhaps trying to control them in an attempt of dealing with her own insecurities.

As for intensity, it really is a word that rings true to this sign regardless. But we should remember that for those that dwell in the deep waters, any version of light and easy is automatically ruled out as it would never be able to survive there..
